I just had to post pictures of my cute little slings we did for the cantaloupe. Yes, I stand corrected - there are 5-6 cantaloupe out there, not watermelon yet. (they look kinda the same in the beginning stages) Works out better for me though...I like cantaloupe much more than I like watermelon.
Anywhoo... so here's the uplifted cantaloupe. I was focused on slinging them to the chain link fence behind the garden, but my ever-intuitive husband thought to tie them to the little picket fence that protects the garden from Barkley. It works! May not work for the heavier watermelon, but we'll see how this works for now. And hope the watermelon grow out farther.
Aren't they cute just chillin in their hammocks? :P
And here's a pic of one we left on a pad for experiment sake.
And the final result of the HUGE red bell pepper and another orange bell pepper, aren't they pretty?...
Also, I tried to snap a picture of the newest member of the garden, but he (or she) wouldn't let me. Its a toad! Ewww! He is living in the garden. Quite frankly, it creeps me out a bit. I don't wanna stick my hand in there to pull off a tomato and have a toad jump on me. But I'm sure that's why we don't have a problem with bugs - he's def a little helper in that arena!

I think that using slings is a great idea, but I must admit that I got quite a chuckle reading about it and seeing the pictures. :)
