Fencing

No.  Not the sport.

I forgot to come back and post about our fence situation.  Ugh.

Christmas morning was all well and good.  Cold and VERY windy, but we were having fun inside.  In hindsight, we realized the dogs were MIA a bunch... which was not typical for Christmas morning.  Usually they are all up in our business when we are opening our presents checking for any dropped candy on the floor.  But whatever.  We were busy having fun to notice.

Fast forward to just after lunch time.  My dad shows up, bringing Bailey home.  What?!  Yep.  Bailey was across the street at the neighbor's house.  Our entire side of the back fence (about 40ft) had blown down that morning.  ANd not just the boards (pickets) ....  the 2/4's too!  They just snapped clean in half!  So we couldn't evne just nail it back up.  Ugh.

We made do until after Christmas, keeping the dogs in... and I didn't get any pics cuz things were hectic.  But we had the insurance company come out.  Long story short...they put a claim on our insurance for the fence (replacing the whole thing), for our roof (shingles had ripped off) and for our gutters (also had been blown down) and we got zero dollars.  Yep.  That's right.  Nothing.  Nada.  ZERO.  Why, you may ask?  Well, they put a value on our fence of $300.  Yea.  Right.  I'm not kidding.  Of course, they put the value of the fence we had not the fence we needed.  And it was ancient, but still...  ugh.  So $300 for the fence.  $200 or so for the shingles, a little for the gutters and it came up to just at $1000..  Our deductible was $1500.  So we got a claim and no money.  Yea.  I'm still pretty tee'd off.  I've heard of people getting full brand new roofs after a hail storm.  But we lost a fence, entire shingles and gutters?  And we get nothing.

So.  Brad and my dad worked on repairing the fence over the holiday vacation times.  Digging new post holes, cementing them in, nailing the pickets back up, etc.  It was a lot of work.  We left the shingles and gutters for now (not a necessity like the fence was).  But here's some of the process of the fence...

My dad brought us some of the orange fence/netting to try to contain the dogs while we were at work.  It worked for a bit but eventually they broke a hole through that.  :/  This is view from our back porch - there used to be a fence there...

After Brad started removing and the pickets from the snapped 2x4's...

Setting in new posts right next to where the old ones were still in the ground - concreting them in, setting them over the course of a couple of days (it was cold and wet - not ideal time for concrete work!)...
This is view from the street looking in to our backyard...

Brad still removing pickets and splitting them up to make them easier to handle (it was a large 'sheet'/panel of wood fence!) This was about half of what broke/fell down..

new posts up!  (from the street again)

Snapped posts, just a clean break!

Working on the frames.  My dad pre-cut and pre-dilled holes for the stabilization part of the fence!  He's kinda awesome like that.  :)

Then all that was left was to nail the old pickets back up.  Sounds easy enough right?  Yea...right.  The old ones were stapled in, so all those staples had to be removed to loosen the boards and they are so old and so easily split that that in itself was quite a chore and took a lot of time.  But finally we had a new fence!  (or sort of new ;)

You can probably tell we did have to replace a few of the pickets...they just didn't make it.  But we have a fence again.  Dogs are contained.  We are out the money and the insurance company hasn't heard the last from us...but it's good for now!
