My "Baby" is FIVE!!!

I think I might cry as I write this update. :( While I am so happy to be celebrating my precious daughter’s 5th birthday (and boy are we celebrating! more posts on the partying to follow at a later time), I cannot explain how bittersweet it is to see her get to be so big and grown up. She is supposed to be my ‘baby’ forever! And now, far gone are the baby chubby cheeks, the little chubby tummy that pokes out, the funny waddling run, and the inability to understand things going on around her. She is growing up so fast. That sounds so cliche’ but it is oh-so-true! I know other moms reading can relate.

Five is such a monumental age as well. While its not soo traumatic since she’ll be staying at Montessori School one more year...and therefore we don’t have to technically do that ‘off to Kindergarten’ kinda thing.., its still a very definitive age! Five years old!

At five, Brooke weighs 37 lbs and is 42.5 inches tall, which puts her in 25th percentile for weight and 49th percentile for height.

There are so many things she has accomplished in the last year, I can’t begin to list them all. She has become quite a wonderful big sister and favorite playmate and best friend to sweet Brenna. She is so adoring of her, encouraging, and motherly, yet all the while silly and funny and imaginative.

Academically, she continues to thrive, reading in her mind now (not having to sound out words as much and not having to read out loud either), writing so well she is writing short letters to family members often and they are quite legible and very phonetically correct at least. She is doing math by the numbers (instead of having to count) and is always up for investigating new things. She has learned 2 complete songs on her glockenspiel now and can play them well. She continues to do well and participates wonderfully during dance class as well.

(here she is writing her own 'thank you' cards after receiving a present in the mail)

But all the while, she has such a sweet spirit. She is genuinely kind. While we had some bouts with her here or there, it doesn’t take much to get her back on track with the sweet nature she has built within her. She is still very reserved, quiet and shy, but is an absolute joy to be around when she is her true self. She is empathetic and sympathetic and yet she is also funny and goofy.

Her favorite things nowadays include dancing, karate (a new class she’s begun at school!), swinging...very high!, riding her scooter, jumping on the trampoline, going for walks, helping Brenna do anything, writing letters/notes/cards, riding in the car with the windows down, picnics, coloring, snuggling (yay for me!), and making up stories (she gets that from her dad). She has begun to be very creative. For example, in her storytelling. She tells Brenna stories with logical and sequential beginnings and endings, complete with sound effects and large descriptive movements. It’s quite entertaining.

She is at the age where she says some funny stuff, without realizing its funny. (see the ‘quotables’ section on my sidebar) It reminds me of the TV show “Kids Say the Darndest Things”. They really do. If only I could remember all the good stuff.

Its hard for me to wrap my brain around the fact that only 5 short years ago she was just a tiny newborn baby wrapped up so tight and snuggly. Now she is such a fun-loving, sweet-spirited little girl who can rationalize, reason and act so grown up. She is learning to be yet even more independent and we are trying to learn to LET her be more independent.

;-)

I honestly don’t know where the time has gone. Though I do try really hard to enjoy each and every little moment I have with this young child I have. She is such a blessing to me, to our little family, and to everyone who gets to know her. I love her with my whole heart so much so that it hurts and I am so proud of the beautiful child she is growing into being.

Happy Birthday to my sweet Brooke Ashley!
