Yesterday, we spent a good portion of the day working on our garden. Our new and improved garden. I really messed up when we built our garden originally. I planned it right alongside a chain link fence (that's used to block off a portion of our yard) thinking the fence would help support some of the more viney or tall plants. It didn't really work out that way. The tomatos were still too far away to use the fence as a stake. And the cantaloupes and watermelons would attach themselves all right but would outweigh what the fence could hold. And...it made it difficult to get at any plants in the back of the garden. So, this year when Brad decided (yes, his choice...not mine) he wanted to make our garden bigger and taller, I suggested we also move it a little bit away from the fence to allow us to walk behind to pull weeds and such. This project has been on our to-do list for a few weekends now and it's just now getting done. But with two kids and a husband who works till dark, it's just hard getting things done around here. But this weekend was the weekend we started.
So this year, we are raising it up almost 2' and making it longer (to a 16' x 4'). We got a truck load of GOOD compost really cheap at The City (why didn't anyone ever tell us about this before?!) that we will use to fill it and we scored a mat of weedblock that we plan to use for other beds around the house (since it's 50' long!). After we finish preparations for our garden and a couple other beds, we have to get started prepping Brooke's garden too! She has a love for gardening as well and has already been bugging us to get some stuff for her garden (a SMALL bed we set up just for her last year by her swingset).
And I am SUPER excited about all my fruit trees we will soon be planting as well. You might remember me posting that I got fruit trees as a Christmas present from a family member. What a great gift! I now have plum, orange, and key lime trees, as well as a blueberry bush. I would also like to get two apple trees, but we'll see....
Here's a couple 'extra' pics of a picnic we had outside during the midst of our garden work today. I had been promising Brooke a picnic, so today we finally did it! We even got some more use out of Brenna's Bumbo seat! :D
Both girls really really LOVE being outside! They definitely come by it naturally and I am so glad for that! :-)
