Vocabulary Word Hat Parade

Instead of a "Halloween" party/event... the kids at Brooke's school do a vocabulary word hat parade. They each draw a word from a pool and have to make a hat showing that word. Then they have a parade...

Brooke drew the word "state". Hrm. At first I thought this was not a good word. But then I heard some of the other kids' words and I was ok with.

We decided to use the word state, as in a state in the United States. So we bought a cheap foam hat (around $1) and hot glued red white and blue ribbon around it. Then we selected the states that Brooke has visited or traveled to. There were 9. We found them on a computer and printed them out. She colored them and cut them out. Then we glued them on pipe cleaners and stuck them down into the ribbon on the hat. We also added the whole map of the USA on the back side that she colored and cut. And really I am proud to say she did a lot of it! The only things I did were the gluing, b/c we used a hot glue gun...something I'm not real comfortable with her using obviously! And I helped her do some of the cutting too to help it go faster.

Oh, her word also had to be displayed, so we used a glittery sheet of paper and used sticker letters to make her word display on front. I think its kinda cute! :)

And then today was the day they had the parade. Of course, it was COLD! Its been freaking 100 degrees for 6 months and now, today, its freezing. And the wind! The poor kids were having to really hold their hats on tight!

Here's Brooke with her boyfriend...

And Brenna freezing, trying to block the wind by the pole...

And her whole class with the substitute teacher/intern (her teacher was out on this day)
