A new leg!

Yesterday was the day. The day to get the cast off. Whew. We made it! 5 long trying weeks. 5 weeks with no baths, 5 weeks of telling her 'no, you can't do that.', 5 weeks of wearing dresses only and one shoe, 5 weeks of using bags and rubberbands to keep it clean, except it didn't stay clean. It got nasty and stinky. Ugh... it was rough. After now going through 2 broken bones, I will take an arm over a leg any day! (though I'd prefer to have none thankyouverymuch!).

So, here is Brenna headed to the dr's office...

She was so scared and adamant...or better yet, ..just okay with just leaving the cast on. Because we had to go back and get a second cast very early on in this process, she knew what was involved in taking it off. And it was the scary circular saw! I don't blame her. You know, you would think with technology today they could think of a better way to do this! Its loud, it vibrates your hold body, a metal saw that doesn't seem to want to stop if it gets close to you (we know it does of course).
Anyway, to help calm her fears, the sweet nurses (they all love her up there!) gave her an Easter egg filled with chocolate...

Though it didn't help much honestly. She still screamed and screamed and trembled with fear. Afterward the scary part was over she was ok, just still a little shaken. We went for the Xray (to make sure it was healed ok) and she just kept saying in a shaky broken voice, "I don't like that tool."

The Xray looked good. The dr said its "on its way" to healing, which is kinda the same thing they told us with her arm. But that the cast can definitely be off and for the next couple of weeks while it continues to grow strong, to try to keep her less active (ha!). As a side, I got to see the Xray, and she is growing tiny cute little knee caps. :)

Here she is post cast, waiting on the dr...

Playing on Daddy's phone always helps the time go by easier. :)

Then the dr came in, and pulled another egg from behind her ear! (this one also with chocolate) She was beyond impressed and wants to keep her magic egg forever. :) Here she is leaving with her eggs and her cast (she insisted she wanted to keep it b/c it was so pretty)

And then we get home. She hasn't walked much, if at all. She will stand with support, but will bear no weight on it yet. She says it hurts to bend it. And is very timid about even trying to walk even holding someone's hand. But all this to be expected. As long as she gets back to 'normal' after a week or so, she won't need any physical therapy or anything and the dr fully expected her to do so. Here she is the morning after leaning on the couch...look at that pretty leg that we've waited so long to see again!

PS - Oh, and the bandaid is there only because she wanted it because she said it would help make her leg better and stronger so she could walk again one day. :)

I'm with Brenna - that saw is totally scary! I broke both bones in my arm when I was 8ish and didn't cry when they gave me an IV or when they popped the bone back into place....but when they came at me with that saw to get my cast off, it was all over! It got even worse when I saw that my arm hair turned dark after being in a cast for months, I was horrified!
