Work Night

Last night the girls had work night at their school. This is their chance to show the parents what they do at school all day. We've been to several of these over the few years, but this is the first with both kids! And unfortunately, at the same time, Brooke had her first dance class. So, Brad took Brenna (on time) and Brooke and I came late. Which meant we missed out on getting to see any real work she does because by the time we got there, it was pretty much time to leave. :(

But, lucky for me, I follow along regularly at drop-offs and pick-ups with what she is doing or not doing. So, so far she has just finished her latest reading book, which puts her in the second semester of 1st grade reading. She has mastered addition and subtraction and is now working on counting, writing, adding up to and over 100. They have just begun to work on multiplication.

Brenna has begun picking up on reading a little. She went in knowing all her letter and letter sounds, but spent the first couple weeks at school learning the ropes of how this school thing works. Knowing the routine, the rules, etc. She is very big in that she is often mistaken for a 3yr old. She gets her work one at a time and is to the point where she will put each tray up as she finishes and get another with no prompting. Just recently Ms Lydia has begun to work with her on sounding out short 3 letter words. She is still SOOO little! So she doesn't 'get' the concept that she is reading, but she is definitely able to. She can put C-A-T (cuh - aa - tuh) together, she just doesn't get that that's what 'reading' is. She has been able to count but is starting to learn to recognize all the numbers and what they look like. A lot of what Ms Lydia is doing with her now is just letting her get her groove and expose her to things, with a little bit of work in reading.

Anyway, here's some pictures (of course!) from our night...

She always has to give Ms Lydia a kiss and a hug before we leave. So sweet! <3

Julia, hope things are going better by now! I am a bit spoiled by Ms Lydia. But next year, I'll be in the same boat as you with 1st grade... :( Yea, I, too, wish I could talk her into teaching through high school! :)
