I love reading books, if only I have the time to do so when I am not utterly exhausted. I am a very fast reader and, if interesting enough, I can finish a book in one night easy. Well, along comes my iPod. Now, I can listen to books! Excellent for the multi-tasker in me. :-) I listen while I grocery shop, working in the yard, etc. Anytime I have to myself I can listen while I still get other things done. It's wonderful! While not the same as "reading" a book, I am finding it just as enthralling sometimes.
Anyway, most of the time, I just have it keyed up and anytime I get a chance, I'll pick up in the book where I last left off. It might be that I only listen to 10 min at a time, but I kinda like that.
However, today I started a new book and listened to it pretty much from start to finish! It was THAT good. Of course, it was an abridged version and only 3 hrs and some change, but still. It was THAT good.
You may notice a new link on my sidebar to this book (underneath the "Our Wish Lists" gadget). It's called Same Kind of Different As Me. You can click the title to go to the official website. Or you can just listen to me ramble for a bit. It's basically the story of a black man brought up as a poor "slave" though slaves were outlawed by his time....he was still working for 'the man'. Throughout the many challenges in his life, he worked on a plantation picking cotton, he goes to prison, gets out, can't find work, hops a train and ends up in Texas where he is homeless but fed daily by a local mission. Insert here the story of a wealthy art dealer who was swayed by his wife to do some volunteer time at this same mission. The two become friends, through the art dealer's wife's coercision and despite the art dealer's reluctance. The wife brings them closer to each other and closer to God and their spirituality in a friendship that is most unlikely. It is a true story and very worth your time.
I got led to this book b/c I have tickets to go see the authors speak next week at the Expo Center and I wanted to have read the book first. I am so glad I did and can't wait to see them next week! It's a short read (or listen ;-) ) so go pick it up! You won't regret it!
