Reindeer Run

Brooke's school was supposed to have their annual Turkey Trot just before Thanksgiving, but it got rained out. :( The kids were bummed. Or at least my kid was. Then it got postponed till December and we are now calling it the Reindeer Run. For the little kids (K-2nd grade) they had to run 3 laps around the track, which equates to one mile. The bigger kids (3rd-5th) had to run the perimeter of the school three times, which I think equated to just under 2 miles.

Now, let me back up a bit. First of all, Brenna's finger is doing much better! She is finally bandaid-less and the new skin has grown in and all is mostly well. Now we just wait for the new nail to come in, which will take 6-8 mos.

Those kind of things never seem to happen to Brooke. When Brenna falls (always an accident), it just turns out big. When Brooke falls, its no big deal. No major damage typically. She is genuinely more cautious. Thankfully. Because she is also one that doesn't tolerate pain or the fear of pain very well..

Then comes the Friday morning before the Reindeer Run. Just as we were about to head out the door for school, I tell Brooke to go to her closet to get her gloves b/c its cold out and she'll be running outside today...she might want the gloves. I wash the breakfast dishes. A few minutes go by and all of the sudden I hear screaming from her room. I sigh. Its typical for Brooke to bump into something and scream like someone ripped out her arm. So I go back to check on her and she is crouched down with blood pouring from her face/nose. I ask her what happened. Apparently, she went into her room, opened her top dresser drawer to look for the gloves. They weren't there (they were in her closet), so she leaves the drawer open and goes to the closet. When she comes out of the closet, she turns around and stands up and hits her face (her WHOLE face) on the WHOLE drawer that she left open. I calm her down...she is actually handling it better than usual, for her. We go to the bathroom to clean her up. She has a bruise on her forehead close to her hairline, a bruise on her forehead just above her eyebrow, a substantial cut on her nose, going from the top, in between her two eyebrows all the way down her nose and to the side and a little bit inside one of her nostrils (this was, by far, the worst part), another substantial bruise on her cheekbone that was pretty large and also was scraped and a smaller cut on the other cheek. I'm telling you. She hit her WHOLE face on the WHOLE drawer. And what she was most upset about was how she looked. There are no pictures. And the ones I took later are all photoshopped. It was the only way she allowed me to take pics of her. :( She was soo worried about people that might laugh at her and how she looked, etc. She really did look bad. Like she had been in a bad bar fight. Even after I warned Brad about how bad it was, when he first saw her, he was stunned. :(

Sooo.... this was Friday. As of this posting, she is doing much better and her face is looking a lot better. And, she is a lot better with how she looks again. So, on the road to recovery.

We still made the Reindeer Run. We had to keep stopping the bleeding throughout the day but she was ok to run by 10am. And run, she did. She ended up getting 4th place!!! So awesome! She ran almost the whole way only stopping a couple times to catch her breath. And she was fast. Well, obviously. She got FOURTH PLACE! So proud of her! :)

Here is her group starting off (and if you can see her - pink jacket - she is actually one of the last to get going, and still finished fourth!)...

And passing people by...

FINISHED!!!! (again, a photoshopped picture so you can't see any of her injuries)

getting water afterwards...

Here is a pic of all the ones that placed...

Here is Brooke with her fourth place ribbon .....
