The Bar is Set

The first six weeks of Brooke's school was over last week. Every day, she brings home her daily folder, which includes her homework for the day and a calendar which gives her conduct for the day. The spectrum for this ranges from E - expected, which is where all the kids start out at every day, to S - step down from E, if they do something wrong or are exhibiting bad behavior or aren't paying attention or talking too much or whatever. Then the next step down is an N - meaning "needs improvement", and finally U - unsatisfactory. They have clips (like clothespins) with their names on them that attach to a board labeled "E+ - E - S - N - U". And again, all the kids start the day at E. I was forewarned at 1st grade orientation not to be shocked if the kids were coming home with bad conduct reports the first few weeks. Mainly because they were harder on the kids in the beginning, as they were teaching the rules and getting them use to compliance and such. Also, to get an E+, you have to actually DO something to get your clip for the day moved from E (expected behavior) UP to an E+. And if you get a Happy Visit, which consists of getting to go down the principal's office to get awarded a blue ribbon for something extraordinary you did that day, you typically end your day on an E+. (you also get your name read aloud the next day on morning announcements ;)

I'll let this picture of Brooke's calendar showing her conduct each day for the last 6 weeks speak for itself....

Yea. That bar. She set it kinda high, huh?

Not pictured are the FOUR Happy Visit ribbons she has gotten over the course of the first 6 weeks!

We also got her first report card (with real grades) sent home today for the first six week. All A's. Of course. :) Her lowest was a 92, highest was a 98 (in Math, ironically enough? I say that because she is not as proficient with math skills as in other areas and doesn't like it at all either). Her reading level is of course, above average for her grade level and she's on the top of the scales with all that testing (they sent home test results on that a while back). She's reading an average of 87 words per minute with 94% accuracy. And that's on a 'faulty' test, per her teacher. She says (the teacher) that the Brooke is actually probably reading a little better than that, but the test is a little skewed, b/c they also have to use computer skills, etc... so its not really JUST a reading test. The books she is supposed to check out are orange or yellow dot books. They start at green dot. Most of her class are green dots. Orange dot are typically 2nd grade level books and yellow are end of 2nd grade to beginning 3rd grade books. So overall, I guess she's doing well. ;)

I had no doubt that Brooke would be a rule follower, a quiet, obedient kid in the class. But its still nice to see all those E's, and a LOT of E+'s, and even a few E++'s with a "wow" attached. Its also nice to know her grades her showing through to to her abilities and that she seems to be adapting well. Her teacher told me this morning that Brooke is her 'go-to' girl, if she needs something done or some help or what not. Makes my heart happy. :-)
